Frequently Asked Questions

bulletCan I use CD Virtuals (CDV) to share music and movie CDs?
Answer:  No.  There are no plans to make this possible at this time.
bulletCan I use CDV to share copy-protected CDs?
Answer:  It may work for some, but not all.  If you are interested in making personal backups of copy-protected CDs, then you may wish to take a look at Daemon Tools.
bulletCan I talk to someone if I need help?
Answer:  There is an fee of $50 per incident for telephone support.  Email support is free for licensed users.  Help is extensive within CDV.  Traditional help is available by pressing F1, tool tips give field-specific instructions and the How-To's under the Help menu in the main window should be reviewed thoroughly before calling or emailing CDV Support.  Network design, connectivity issues, and access rights issues will not be handled by CDV Support.  You are encouraged to consult your network administrator or outside consultant regarding these issues.  If you are located in the Chicago, Illinois area and need network services and support, contact Executive Technologies Corporation at (847)277-9909.
bulletWhat if I just want to control shared files by creating an image in the shared folder?
Answer:  Create (using a CD/DVD writer drive) a CD or DVD platter with the data you wish to share and create the CD Record in CDV as you would for a commercial CD/DVD.
bulletHow quickly will CDV create a managed image?
Answer:  This is largely computer hardware dependent.  CDV verifies each file after it is copied making the imaging process a little slower.  A fast CPU (1.8 GHz or faster), 256 MB (more is better) of RAM, and 7200 RPM hard drives will give the best results.  You should temporarily disable real-time anti-virus scanning and close other open applications while creating a managed image.
bulletWhat operating system is required for CDV?
Answer:  Windows 200X Server for 11 or more current image accesses, or Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP Professional.  Each operating system should have the current service pack(s) installed.
bulletDoes CDV compress managed image files?
Answer:  No.  The decompression of files would delay the delivery of the files to the workstation.  We do not recommend enabling compression on NTFS drives where managed images reside.
bulletHow large of a hard disk do I need?
Answer:  As a rule of thumb use 700MB for each CD image and 4,000MB for each DVD image.  Multiple by the number of images you require of each.  Add the two numbers together + 100MB for CDV programs & files, and divide by 1024.  The result is the number of gigabytes (GB) you will need.  Add another 8GB for your operating system and other programs.  Your hard disk drive should be no smaller than the computed total GB.
bulletAre there any annual maintenance fees?
Answer:  No.  If you wish to upgrade to a new version of CDV when it is released, just contact CDV Sales.  The then current price, less $10, will be your upgrade price.  Your image licenses will remain as they are.
