Are you as tired of SPAM email as we were?
We have some email accounts that have been in use for over 10 years. You can just imagine the volume of SPAM email messages that are sent to us - over 300 per day.
We created filters in Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird. We still had to review those that were moved to the deleted items folder as the filters just couldn't be trusted. The real pain was that all of the emails had to be put on our PCs before we could test them. If an email met the conditions of more than one filter, it appeared that many times in our Deleted Items folder. This took time even with a high speed Internet connection.
We went looking for services and software programs that could help us out. Wow! Even we were confused by what we found. Here is the criteria that we used:
- Allow the preview of emails BEFORE they are downloaded from the email server
- It must handle multiple email accounts
- The cost had to be less than $50 per year per PC
- It had to be smart - i.e. learn from how we handled emails yet use solid technologies to flag emails
- Automatically access lists of known "spamming" domain names and tag the emails accordingly
- Allow us to create friendly individual email senders as well as friendly email domains
- Allow us to maintain our own blacklist of senders and domains
- Be easy to use and learn
- Allow us to "bounce" emails back to the sender to discourage sending to us in the future
We found email services that cost up to $50 per month per email account that required you to forward all your email to a server somewhere in the world to be filtered for SPAM and viruses. Only the ones they determined to be good would then be sent on to us. Ouch!
